All States Ag Parts To Open New Location in De Soto, IA

All States Ag Parts, one of the nation's leading used, new and rebuilt ag parts suppliers, announced they will be opening their new retail location in De Soto, IA on January 2, 2012. All States Ag Parts now operates 8 locations throughout the midwest supplying farmers, repair shops and equipment dealers with new, used and rebuilt tractor parts and combine par ts.

"Our new facility greatly expands the parts selection available. We have almost 10 times the warehouse space we previously had and are stocking thousands of commonly needed parts. These parts are available for same day pick-up, making it very convenient for area farmers", said Chad Bagby, New Parts Division Manager for All States Ag Parts.

"In addition to the thousands of parts we have in stock, we have over 100,000 new after-market parts that are available with 1 to 2 day delivery", Bagby said. "The new distribution center in De Soto is already fully stocked and has been shipping orders world-wide since August. We're excited about being able to open the retail side of business and make the parts available to local farmers too".

De Soto, IA is located approximately 15 miles west of the Des Moines metro area along Interstate 80. The new facility is an expansion and relocation of the operations that were previously handled in Urbandale, IA. In addition to a retail sales area and parts warehouse, the De Soto facility is also the company's headquarters for internet and catalog sales. The relocation brings a total of 20 jobs to De Soto.

"In De Soto we will have a staff of 7 full-time parts experts handling our internet and catalog sales. This has been a tremendous growth area for our company. We ship parts throughout the world", said Jeff Griggs, chief operations officer for All States Ag Parts. In addition to warehouse and catalog sales staff, we have corporate marketing, purchasing, IT and operations staff located in De Soto".

"Our new location is literally a stone's throw from I-80", said Terry Burkart, marketing director for All States Ag Parts, "we have great visibility and easy access for farmers and will be providing them with a tremendous selection of parts not previously available in central Iowa. With our new buildings in De Soto, we have over 4,000 sq. ft of office and showroom space and 18,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space. We also have an additional 8 acres of land for future growth".

"One area for immediate expansion in De Soto is the addition of a rebuild shop for carburetors, distributors and other small parts", said Griggs.

The new rebuild shop will combine with All States Ag Parts other rebuilding operations to offer a full complement of rebuilt ag parts including cylinder heads, crankshafts, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, scv's, clutches, water pumps, straw choppers, final drives and more. Each of these parts is covered by an industry-leading 1-year warranty and is rebuilt by trained technicians.

"A salvage yard is not currently in the plans for De Soto", said John Dyke, the owner of All States Ag Parts, "but our seven other locations each include salvage yards ranging in size up to 50 acres. The De Soto operation will have quick-access to the used parts from these yards with most parts available in a day or two".

What Happens to Your Tractor When It's Done Farming

Every day hundreds of farm tractors, combines and other equipment is retired from service throughout the country. The reasons are many. Sometimes the tractor is just too old to do the job required. Sometimes a collision, fire or other accident damages the unit to the point where it is not cost effective to repair it. Many times a major component, such as an engine or transmission breaks, and the repair bill becomes more expensive than the overall value of the tractor. Sometimes, as we see more and more frequently, the farmer retires and the tractor he’s farmed with for decades retires with him.

What happens to all of these tractors and combines?

Some of them end up in a fencerow where they sit rusting away for years. Some are hauled away to the scrap metal recycling plant and eventually melted down and made into other products.

We think the lucky ones end up in an All States Ag Parts salvage yard where each and every component of a tractor is recycled for it’s greatest good.

“Once a tractor, combine or other piece of ag equipment is delivered to one of our salvage yards, it hits the teardown shop. The first step is to remove all the critical parts from the machinery. These parts are then inspected by our skilled mechanics. Once the part passes inspection, it’s cleaned up, labeled and stored inside of our waehouses until a farmer or repair shop needs it”, explains John Dyke, CEO of All States Ag Parts.

“Our inspection process is very important. We want all of our parts to work when the farmer gets them installed. For those rare occasions when an inspected part does fail, we offer a 1-year replacement warranty on all of our used parts,” says Dyke.

“Some of the components, such as SCV’s, hydraulic pumps and transmission components fail the initial inspection and are sent to one of our rebuild shops,” says Dyke. “In the rebuild shop, our mechanics completely tear down the part and replace the seals, worn gears, cracked housings and any other worn or broken components. Once we’re done rebuilding a part, it will meet or exceed the original OEM specs.”

Even after the parts are stripped off the tractor there’s a lot of recycling yet to be done. The shells of the tractors and combines are moved to the salvage yard where they remain until being sent to a metal recycling plant. All of the unused metal parts end up being recycled into other products.

Fluids, such as oil and anti-freeze, are drained from the equipment when the unit arrives to prevent the chances for ground contamination. These fluids are stored in environmentally safe containers until they can be delivered to a recycling plant.

Recycling of the tractor tires can take many different directions.

“Often times, the tires from a damaged tractor are in really good shape,” says Dyke. “We sell hundreds of quality used tires every year. Good treaded tires are often one of the first things to sell because we are able to sell tires at significantly less money than new tires.”

The worn out tires are sent to a recycling plant where they are chopped up and turned into playground material and other.

Pre-Harvest Combine Maintenance Tips

Fall harvest is around the corner. Before you hit the field, give your combine a once-over with this 12-point checklist.

Clean the machine of dust and dirt for better operation, and to help spot wear and potential problems.
Attach headers to combine and make sure they work, checking height and contour controls.
On the grain table header, inspect sickle blades and guards, and inspect teeth in augers and reel.
On the corn head, inspect gathering chains, and sprockets, and adjust width of stripper plates. Check and adjust drive chains. Remember: Row-unit gearboxes operate as mini-transmissions and need to be checked once a year. Refill with grease or oil depending on age and brand of corn head.
Check all belts for wear and replace as needed.
Check all chains and bearings for wear; replace chains that can’t be adjusted or tensioned correctly.
For axial combines, inspect rotor and concave, checking wires for damage and bars for wear.
Check unloading system auger. If edges are sharp like a razor blade, replace.
Perform service checks: engine oil, fuel filter, air cleaner, and hydraulic oil.
Grease all points per operator’s manual. If a fitting doesn’t take grease, stop and find out why.
Safety first … and last. Inspect all lights, flashers and reflectors for travel by road.

Update your Feeder House Chain to Save Wear and Tear on Your Combine

On the drive to work this morning, I saw a couple of corn fields that are starting to show signs of drying down. It won't be long before the combines are rolling here in Central Iowa and other parts of the country. What a perfect time to talk about feederhouse chain.

It seems to us that most feeder chains were designed in Fred Flintstone's day. They are heavy and cause premature wear on the drive mechanism and feeder house bottom. They often wear out sprockets and stretch chains prematurely because of their weight. The slats are virtually impossible to straighten and because they are riveted, you are almost forced into buying a new feeder chain every time a slat bends. At All States Ag Parts we offer a better solution in feederhouse chain.

Our Feeder Chain will handle today's larger crops, improve feeding, last longer and reduce maintenance costs. It starts with 557 chain. With heavier rollers and side links it will outlast the original chain by hundreds of hours.

The slats are bolted, not riveted. The slats are made of plastic with a spring steel insert, giving the slat flexibility as well as "memory" so that when it is bent it will return to its original shape. The plastic slats have a trailing edge so when the flap goes around the drive sprocket it acts like a flipper and speeds up to force your crop into the threshing cylinder.

There are also fewer slats. We've taken away enough to reduce the weight but left plenty to carry any crop. With fewer slats the weight is reduced by 35%. With less weight you'll notice less wear on the bearings, sprockets and feeder house bottom.

This is how it works :

As the trailing edge of the slat goes around the drive sprocket it acts like a flipper and speeds up to force your crop into the threshing area the first time around. The design of the slat makes it impossible for your crop to follow it back around. Back feeding is eliminated.

Over the years there have been many weak imitations but for long term durability and true value, but in the end, not compares to our feederhouse chain from All States Ag Parts.

ROTARY CONCAVES

Although a rotary combine uses a rotor instead of a cylinder and even if the concaves do look a bit different, the concaves on conventional and rotary combines both have to perform the same two functions--threshing and separating.

To allow for threshing and separation in different crops you can use wide wire or narrow wire concaves or any combination. Round bar concaves are also available.

All States Ag Parts carries precison bored concaves so they fit better and are easier to properly adjust. The wire holes are drilled with state of the art, computer controlled, multiple head drills. This ensures the precision alignment of holes, and a snug wire fit. With an All States Ag Parts precision built concave there's no wire-to-hole gap to trap straw.

Rotary combines are achieving very high capacity figures. Along with higher capacities, rotary combines tend to have higher wear factors. To help control maintenance costs our wire concaves are manufactured using 1045 steel and have more steel bar over the wire. They are more aggressive and last longer. Side frames, hooks and wire diameters are also heavier so they last longer and keep their shape.

All States Ag Parts carries a round bar concave for popcorn, high moisture corn and specialty crops. Rather than wires the concave has ¾” steel bars. Since the round bar is less aggressive than the square bar of the wire concave, the kernel is treated gentler.

Most people believe it is the impact of the cylinder bars on grain that does the threshing. The truth is that it is material rubbing on material that does the threshing. You know this if you have ever run a combine as slow as it would go or by cleaning up a corner when straight cutting. You will have cracks, unthreshed heads and whitecaps all at the same time. Then, when you increase the travel speed, all the problems disappear. The only thing that changed was the amount of material coming into the combine.
The rotor simply drives the heads through of the concave before they are threshed. This leads to unthreshed heads. They will overload the return, end up in the tank as dirty sample or become loss out the back of the combine.

You simply have to have something at the front of the concave to hold the heads in place long enough for the rub bars to thresh the seeds out of the head.

Plastic sieves? Here's why you should be using one in your combine.

August 23, 2011 - As farmers throughout the midwest start preparing for this fall's corn and soybean harvest, I thought I'd take this opportunity to talk a little about plastic sieves. Plastic louvered sieves have been on the market for several years with several brands of sieves available . Unfortunately, not all brands are created equally and buyers must be wary of inferior brands. At All States Ag Parts we carry a Canadian brand, and feel this is the cream of the crop as far as quality goes.

There are several advantages to installing a plastic sieve in your combine. The most important to me is the ability to replace the plastic louvers should a louver become damaged. Unlike the old metal louvers that bend and break, plastic louvers are flexible and pop back in place should a rock or other foreign object go through your combine. Even if you have the misfortune of breaking one of the louvers they are easily replaceable.

Here's some additional advantages of our plastic sieves over the old metal type.

Improved combine performance and increased life is what the adjustable plastic louvered top and bottom sieves are all about. They are designed to outlast and out perform the original top chaffer and bottom sieve by 2 to 1.

Longer lasting: The plastic louver is flexible. Rather than bend and twist as original metal louvers do they will return to their original shape.
The plastic louvers also have a large plastic bearing surface that is 4 times the diameter of the wires used on the original metal louver. As a result there is significantly less wear. If one of the plastic louvers should be damaged they are individually replaceable.

Improved performance: The plastic louvers have a specially designed cupped tail which directs the air more vertical, even when closed. More vertical air gives you better lift. The louver is also designed to allow the sieve to be set wider open. Combine performance improves and the amount of clean grain in the return is reduced, thus cutting down on cracked grain.

Indexed handle : Spring loaded, indexed handle ensures positive, repeatable sieve adjustment.

40% lighter : Because of the plastic louver, Harvest adjustable top and bottom sieves are about 40% lighter. Drive components will last longer.

Can’t rust : The plastic louvers will not rust or seize. They remain easy to adjust for life.

Self Cleaning : The plastic louvers have a smooth self cleaning profile which helps reduce buildup from sappy weeds and snow icing.

5 fresh tractors to be salvaged for used parts arrived at our salvage yards yesterday. Our Downing, WI location received an International 1086.
